Download the Fact Sheet (microsoft word or adobe pdf format*) Since 1992, countries from around the world have been meeting to talk about children and youth with special health care needs. They discuss ways to include these children in the everyday community life of their hometowns. Countries share ideas on how to develop broad national policies, as well as specific, practical local programs. The last Congress was held in 2004, in Stavanger, Norway. Four hundred people from more than 40 countries attended. The 9th Children’s Congress will be held in the United States, in the Washington, DC area, December 4-7, 2006. The theme is “Community Access and Resources for Everyone” (CARE). The meeting will include general sessions for all to attend, as well as smaller workshop sessions. Speakers will address the important roles of families and communities in supporting children and young adults with special health care needs. They will describe ways to build programs that combine health, education, recreation, and social services and use professionals from different disciplines to help these children participate in everyday community activities. Sessions will also explore how to use adaptive technology and computers to promote these goals. The meeting will discuss ways to clearly understand and protect the civil and human rights of people with disabilities. Speakers will describe how families can work with professionals and politicians on a national and local level to solve current problems and continue to make progress in the future. * PDF files require Adobe Reader.
