Medical Management in Today's TRICARE Environment

Registration for the 18-21 May 2010 Medical Management course at Naval Medical Center San Diego will be limited after 10 May 2010. Participants interested in attending the course who submit their registrations after 10 May 2010 may attend, however, meeting materials/training manuals for this course may not be available to those participants.

Attire:

The dress code is the uniform of the day for military personnel and business casual for civilians. On day four of the course, all participants are welcome to wear casual clothing to travel more comfortably.

Registration Fee:

There is no registration fee to attend this course. Participants/Commands are responsible for member TDY/TAD lodging, travel and per diem expenses.

Lodging:

Participants are responsible for making their own lodging reservations. Attached is a list of local off-base lodging facilities (MS Word) to assist you in finding a place to stay. On-base lodging is not available for this course.

Base Access to Naval Medical Center San Diego:

To get onboard at Naval Medical Center San Diego, you will need to provide photo identification. The following is a list of acceptable forms of identification for staff and visitors.

Visitors

  1. Military: Military identification card, or CAC card
  2. Dependants: Dependant identification card.
  3. Civilian: Drivers License or Photo identification card.
  4. Contractors: Region contractor's badge or CAC card.

Please note that if your driver's license or photo identification is utilized, please expect to be questioned by the guard on your destination and reason for requiring access. Military visitors are required to have DOD decals on their vehicle. If you are military and do not have decals, please expect the guards to question you about decal whereabouts.

Staff

  1. Military: Military identification card, CAC card, or Naval Medical Center San Diego badge.
  2. Dependants: Dependant identification card or Naval Medical Center San Diego badge.
  3. Civilian: CAC card or Naval Medical Center San Diego badge.
  4. Contractors: CAC card or Naval Medical Center San Diego contractor's badge.

Please note that staff may utilize the Naval Medical Center San Diego badge to gain access, but the guard may request that you present your proper military identification card or CAC card. Staff is also required to have Department Of Defense decals on their vehicle. If you are staff and do not have decals, please expect the guards to question you about decal whereabouts.

Driving Directions to Naval Medical Center San Diego

From the San Diego International Airport

  1. As you exit the airport turn left on Harbor Drive.
  2. In 1.5 miles, turn left on Grape Street.
  3. Get in the right lane as soon as possible and merge on to I-5 South.
  4. In 1.5 miles exit right on Pershing Drive.
  5. Turn left at the first stop light which is Florida Drive.
  6. As you turn you should see the Hospital to your left and the main gate up ahead.

From I-5, North or South

  1. Take the Pershing Drive exit.
  2. You will end up on Pershing Drive.
  3. Follow Pershing Drive to Florida Drive, the first stoplight.
  4. Turn left onto Florida Drive .
  5. Turn left onto Bob Wilson Drive, the first light, entering NMCSD.

From Highway 163

  1. Go south on Highway 163.
  2. Take Park Blvd. exit.
  3. Turn left on Park Blvd.
  4. Turn right at Zoo Place.
  5. Turn right on Florida Drive at foot of hill.
  6. Turn right onto Bob Wilson Drive, the first light, entering NMCSD.

From Highway 94

  1. Go west on Highway 94 to the end of the highway.
  2. Highway 94 becomes F Street.
  3. Continue on F Street to 16th Street (the first light).
  4. Turn right on 16th Street.
  5. Follow 16th Street to C Street.
  6. Turn right onto C Street and continue to 19th Street.
  7. Turn left onto 19th Street.
  8. Follow 19th Street. Continue to Pershing Drive.
  9. Continue on Pershing Drive.
  10. Follow Pershing Drive to Florida Drive, the first stoplight.
  11. Turn left onto Florida Drive .
  12. Turn left onto Bob Wilson Drive, the first light, entering NMCSD.

To use Public Parking

To use City Lot parking (400/800 lots) near the Veterans Memorial Center Building, and take the free tram to the hospital, do not turn onto Bob Wilson Drive. Instead:

  1. Go past Bob Wilson Drive.
  2. Turn left on Zoo Place.
  3. Turn left at top of hill onto Park Blvd.
  4. At the third stop light, turn left on President's Way.
  5. Park in either the 400 (upper) or 800 (lower) lot.
  6. The tram station is in under the arbor between the two lots.

The hospital tram runs every 15 minutes and is free.

Where to Park - Parking Lots at NMCSD

We suggest parking in one of the following lots. All marked “reserved” are reserved 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A-Lot:

Patient/visitor parking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 

Tram Service from the A-Lot
Tram service is not available from the A-lot. It is a short walk from the A-lot to building 5.

O-Lot (City Owned):

Overflow parking for staff/vendors/contractors from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM Monday to Friday

Tram Service from the O-Lot
There is a tram that runs through the O-lot (overflow parking for staff and vendors only) every 15-20 minutes. The tram service runs from 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM and is free of charge. The tram will drop off at several locations on base, including buildings 1, 2, and 3. The closest stop to the course location in building 5 is by the flag pole in front of building 1. From there, you will need to walk to building 5.

400/800 City Lot:

Staff/patient/vendor/visitor parking, 7 days a week

There is also a tram that runs through the city lot (outside the back gate) every 15-25 minutes. The tram service runs from 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM and is free of charge. The tram will drop off at several locations on base, including buildings 1, 2, and 3. The closest stop to the course location in building 5 is by the flag pole in front of building 1. From there, you will need to walk to building 5.

Course Location

The auditorium is on the first floor of Building 5 and is located towards the front of the building. The auditorium is the first door on the left. 

Course Materials

Participants will receive a 1.5 inch binder with the all of the course presentations included.  This binder weighs approximately 5 pounds, so we recommend considering that when planning for your trip. Participants will be given a CD with all of the presentations as well.
